Over the past four weeks, we’ve had the pleasure of supporting a new group of MSD Job Seekers through our Work Readiness Programme in Lower Hutt — and what a rewarding journey it’s been.
This programme is designed for people who are figuring out their next steps, returning to work, changing careers, or stepping into the workforce for the first time. From day one, the group brought warmth, humour, and a genuine willingness to give things a go, and it didn’t take long for everyone to settle in and support one another.
A Cohort Full of Character and Growth
The group was wonderfully diverse — different ages, backgrounds, and levels of experience — and that made the room a rich and supportive learning environment. Everyone contributed something unique, and over the four weeks we saw confidence grow, new skills develop, and plenty of personal breakthroughs.
There was a lot of laughter, some great “lightbulb” moments, and a real sense of teamwork as participants took part in discussions, activities, and practical exercises. Watching people recognise their strengths and realise what they’re capable of is always one of the best parts of the programme.
Programme Highlights
Throughout the course, participants were involved in a mix of practical learning and personal development. They built confidence through activities that gently challenged them, and they worked together in team-based tasks that encouraged connection and communication.
They spent time setting meaningful goals and weekly plans, learning how to stay focused and motivated. They also explored their strengths and transferable skills, developed personalised CVs and cover letters, and practised interview questions in small groups — something many found both helpful and reassuring.
Participants also learned about job search strategies and workplace expectations, including contracts, KiwiSaver, and managing income.
Another standout moment was the styling session. Our volunteer stylist worked with each participant to put together work-ready outfits, and you could see the confidence lift as they saw themselves in a new light.
Participants shared their thoughts afterwards, saying things like: "Really appreciate the advice and help,” "Clothes are so pretty, colours are great,” and "My stylist made me feel very confident — amazing experience.”

A Graduation to Remember
Graduation day was full of energy and celebration. Everyone arrived dressed up and ready to mark the occasion. There were Secret Santa gifts, handwritten cards, lots of laughter, and even a homemade Graduation Cake brought in by one of the students.
Certificates were handed out, encouraging words were shared, and the pride in the room was clear. The progress made over just four weeks was incredible, and it was a privilege to celebrate that together.

Looking Ahead
We’re excited for this cohort as they move into their work experience placements and continue their job search. Their commitment, effort, and willingness to grow stood out, and we can’t wait to see what they achieve next.
