Meet Charlie, a new mum returning to work after maternity leave. She turned to Yes for Success to find professional attire that fits her new body and boosts her confidence for interviews. Now, having landed a job that aligns with her goals, Charlie is excited to share how Yes for Success has prepared her for this next step in her career journey.
Can you tell us a bit about how you heard about us and why you came to us for assistance?
I am a new mum looking to enter the workforce after my maternity leave. Getting back into the workforce is scary enough, but I was looking for a new position and had to go through the whole process of applications and interviews. My body had changed, and looking through my wardrobe, I thought, “Oh, nothing fits me!”. I heard about Yes for Success when I was working at a mental health and addiction center in Lower Hutt. I arranged for the participants to have dressings at Yes for Success. I was wondering who could help me feel good and confident about myself, and I thought of you guys!
How did we help you?
After I got the clothes for the interview, I felt really confident. I found myself relating to the stylist as we spoke about life and what it is to be a new mum. I got invited to three interviews, and I was feeling confident enough to negotiate and choose which role I wanted to take up. I am really happy with my choice.
How did our volunteers make you feel?
The whole styling process gave me the confidence to get back out there. They were really supportive and very kind. I think it is an amazing service where the volunteers are great at giving out their time to make me feel special and give me a new wardrobe. I can already imagine myself in my new role wearing my new outfits, so thank you for that!
Did our programme meet your expectations?
Oh, it exceeded it! It's such a great service that you guys provide. I was well attended to and made to feel very comfortable. The volunteers are really friendly and it was nice to be able to have conversations with them.
What was the result?
After my first visit, I felt more confident in my ability to re-enter the workspace with a new wardrobe and a stronger mindset. I was invited to three job interviews and was offered two of those. The fact that I chose a role that aligns with my goals and values was such a win. Now I feel ready to take on the professional world and look good doing it!
What did this mean to you? What changed for you as a result?
I came in with the goal of wanting to feel like myself again. When you have a baby, your identity changes; you’re a stay-at-home mum, and your body is different. However, it has been nice to take this time and this experience to get acquainted with who I am now. I have new shoes to fill both in my personal and professional lives.
What next? Have you set any other goals?
For now, I want to focus on this new phase in my life and enjoy it. I am excited to join the workforce. If time permits, I’d like to check out the other events organised by Yes for Success. I attended the Success Workshop on networking, and it was really nice. I have thought of looking into volunteering because it’s such great work. But at present, I want to enjoy my new job.
How would you define success?
Success to me is feeling one with yourself and doing what makes you feel most like yourself. I’ve come to terms with this new way of life and I am ready to take on new challenges. Whether it’s taking a new job or putting on a new coat for the first time, it is going to take time to settle in, but knowing that you have what it takes to face whatever it is is success.
What advice would you give to other people looking to make a change?
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. It might seem daunting at first, but it is so important to take that step for yourself. Don’t shy away from help. Having a supportive network and a space where you feel understood really helps when you’re going through a major milestone in your life. It helps to know that you’re not alone and that there are ways you can boost your self-confidence. So, even if it feels scary, just go for it!
