We’re delighted to congratulate Hasvin, one of our Work Experience Volunteers who recently found employment. Hasvin immigrated from Sri Lanka last year when his wife’s job brought them to Wellington. He wanted to put his accounting qualifications to good use in New Zealand but found job hunting difficult and disheartening. He didn’t give up, and looking to lift his chances he joined YFS earlier this year.

As well as work experience and expanding his English language skills, he made the most of our programmes, getting advice on CV writing, interview techniques and being outfitted by one of our professional stylists. Within a month he secured an accounting job at an international hotel chain. He’s already got his sights on his next goal – becoming a Chartered Accountant.

“It’s important to reach out and keep trying,” says Hasvin. “Before I joined Yes for Success, I didn’t know anyone in Wellington. Now I have a new job and friends and am looking forward to building my life here.”

Congratulations Hasvin, we wish you the best of luck in your new position.

How did you hear about YFS?I was referred to Yes for Success by one of my friends. After researching more about it, I became really interested in joining the team.

Why did you come to us for assistance? As a recent migrant, I faced many difficulties in finding a job that matches my qualifications and skills. I have degrees in accounting and finance and experience in different industries in Sri Lanka but lacked New Zealand work experience. I really wanted to pursue my career but couldn’t secure a job.

How did we help you?I had the opportunity to join YFS as a volunteer. During my time volunteering, I gained experience working in the retail shop and the business support team. I also had the chance to attend CV writing workshops, career advice sessions with a recruitment agency, and interview styling sessions. As a result, I have boosted my self-confidence, gained valuable work experience in the New Zealand context, and improved my communication skills.

How did our volunteers make you feel? The volunteers were incredibly helpful and friendly, making me feel welcome and comfortable from the start. I really enjoyed making new friends and working alongside people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. They were always supportive.

Did our programmes meet your expectations? Yes, even more so. I loved the programmes.

What was the result? It didn’t take long before I was offered the job of Assistant Accountant in an international hotel chain in Wellington. It was a huge relief and a great opportunity - I’m really looking forward to starting.

How would you define success? Achieving my target goal is success for me. Along the way, I often face many obstacles, but overcoming them is another form of success.

What advice would you give others? Don’t give up on your job search. It’s a difficult process, but keep applying for the jobs you want, keep going to interviews. One day, you will see positive results.

What next - have you set any goals? I aim to become a qualified chartered accountant in New Zealand within the next couple of years.
