Shaping your career can be hard when you’re also adapting to a new country, but that’s just what Thilini Jayasundara has been doing. Since arriving in New Zealand from Sri Lanka in 2023, Thilini has completed her Master of Applied Management and continued to build her career skills as a Yes for Success (YFS) work experience volunteer. This year, she joined our Wellington office, where she has grown her business support experience and developed soft skills like New Zealand workplace culture and communication styles.
“The people at Yes for Success were so supportive and welcoming. It helped me feel at home and made the transition to a new country that much easier,” says Thilini.
She’s now poised to seek employment in her adopted home. We wish Thilini all the best as she takes the next steps in her career.
How did you hear about YFS?
I heard about it through the volunteer Wellington website.
Why did you come to us for assistance?
I wanted to gain more local experience and use my skills in a meaningful way. I saw your organisation as a place where I could both help the community and continue learning in a supportive environment.
How did we help you?
You provided me with opportunities to apply my administrative skills in real situations, which boosted my confidence and gave me practical New Zealand experience. The coordinator, Sasmita, always encouraged and motivated me to learn new things, identified areas for growth, and gave me opportunities to develop presentation skills and leadership qualities.
How did our volunteers make you feel?
The volunteers were welcoming, professional, and supportive. They made me feel valued and part of a team, which motivated me to give my best.
Did our programme(s) meet your expectations?
Yes, absolutely. The programme was well-organised, and I learned much more than I expected. It gave me both practical skills and a sense of community contribution. I also appreciated that the programme kept us updated with new technologies, helping me to stay current and adaptable in today’s work environment.
What was the result?
I gained valuable experience, built my confidence in handling financial and administrative tasks, and developed stronger teamwork and communication skills.
How would you define success?
Success, to me, is making a positive impact through my skills while also growing personally and professionally. It means helping others while also achieving my own goals.
What advice would you give others?
I would encourage others to take up volunteer opportunities because they are a great way to gain experience, meet people, and make a real difference.
What next? Have you set any goals?
My next goal is to secure a full-time role in administration where I can apply my new skills and experience, continue to grow professionally, and contribute positively to an organisation.
