Sometimes, all it takes is a little guidance and a supportive environment to set you up for success. Bridgit found that at Yes for Success, where she was welcomed and encouraged by fellow volunteers and staff. Arriving from India, Bridgit initially lacked the confidence and experience to secure a job in a new country. She came to Dress for Success determined to start her career journey on the right foot and improve her skills in a low-pressure environment.

Through our Work Experience programme, Bridgit built her customer-service skills in retail and marketing and became adept at speaking English in a New Zealand workplace. Her confidence was further buoyed by the supportive relationships she developed in our Wellington Hub. “I felt challenged but supported every step of the way,” she says. Bridgit now has a job at Chemist Warehouse, working in retail, as well as the fundamentals and motivation to continue developing her skills in her career.

How did you hear about YFS?

I first heard about Dress for Success through a friend who had already been through the programme. They told me how much it helped them gain confidence, improve their skills, and find opportunities in New Zealand. Their story inspired me to explore DFS for myself. I decided to join because I believed it could be the right starting point for my own journey.

Why did you come to us for assistance?

When I arrived in New Zealand, I realised I needed local work experience and stronger communication skills to succeed in the job market. I was also looking for a supportive environment where I could learn and grow without feeling pressured. DFS seemed like the perfect place for that. I wanted guidance, practical training, and the chance to build my confidence for future job opportunities.

How did we help you?

YFS gave me real, hands-on work experience that prepared me for the professional world in New Zealand. I gained valuable retail and marketing experience, developed strong customer service skills, and improved my English communication through daily practice. The team also guided me in understanding workplace culture here, which was very important for me. This combination of skills and experience helped me feel confident and job-ready.

How did our volunteers make you feel?

The volunteers at YFS were always welcoming, patient, and encouraging. They created a positive environment where I felt comfortable asking questions and trying new things. I want to give a special thanks to Sasmita, the Wellington Hub Coordinator, who supported me from the very beginning. She always believed in me, motivated me when I felt unsure, and made me feel like I truly belonged.

Did our programme meet your expectations?

Yes, the programme didn’t just meet my expectations. It went far beyond them. I thought I would only learn basic skills, but I ended up gaining so much more, including confidence and practical work experience. By the end, I was ready to take on new opportunities in the workforce.

What was the result?

The result has been life-changing for me. I successfully completed my course, and soon after, I secured a job in New Zealand. The skills I learned at DFS helped me perform well in interviews and adapt quickly to my new role. I am proud of how far I have come since joining the programme.

How would you define success?

To me, success means taking steps towards your goals and not giving up, even when things are challenging. It’s about learning, growing, and becoming more confident in yourself. Success is not just about the final result, but the progress you make along the way. At DFS, I experienced this kind of success first-hand.

What advice would you give others?

My advice is to take the first step and trust the process. Even if you feel unsure about your abilities, programmes like DFS can help you discover skills and strengths you didn’t know you had. Surround yourself with supportive people who encourage you to keep going. The right guidance can truly change your career and your life.

What next? Have you set any goals?

My next goal is to continue learning and developing my skills in my new role. I want to build on the foundation I gained at DFS and work towards career advancement. I am also planning to take additional training to expand my opportunities. In the long term, I hope to grow into a position where I can guide and inspire others, just as DFS and Sasmita inspired me.
