Building Skills and Confidence in Upper Hutt

We’ve just wrapped up a successful How-To Series at the Upper Hutt Library — a practical, community-led programme designed to help people gain skills, grow confidence, and take the next steps toward employment or personal goals.

Supported by Upper Hutt City Council, the series ran over six workshops and covered a range of useful topics including CV writing, career paths, goalsetting, and preparing for interviews. Each session was interactive and accessible, offering a relaxed environment where participants could learn, ask questions, and put new tools into practice straight away. A highlight was our Interview Practice session, where participants took part in mock interviews and received live feedback. For many, it was the first time they’d had a chance to explore how to talk about their strengths and experience in a safe, supportive setting.

To wrap up the series on a high note, participants were also invited to take part in a styling session — helping them build confidence through interview-ready outfits and practical wardrobe tips. It was a fun and empowering way to celebrate their progress and prepare for what’s next. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

Many participants shared that they now feel more confident applying for jobs, and appreciated the connection, support, and encouragement that came with learning in a group setting. Following the success of the Upper Hutt series, we’re now working on bringing the How-To format to Wellington, expanding its reach and impact.

A huge thank you to Upper Hutt Library, Upper Hutt City Council, and everyone who participated, facilitated, and supported this series. Keep an eye out for upcoming sessions — we’d love to see you there!

Just some of the feedback from our participants:
