Searching for a job was proving an impossible task for Lucy during 2024, so Lucy decided to take a different approach by searching Wellington volunteer positions as Lucy wanted to prove to herself that she was still capable of working over an extended period of time.

Reaching out to Yes for Success in challenging times led to clarity of direction and set Lucy on a path of building strong educational foundations toward a thriving, successful future.

Lucy's story reflects that by taking a first step and applying for a styling at YFS after a recommendation can led to better prospects and new connections.

How did you hear about us?

I first heard about YFS through an Employment Consultant, who recommended applying for a styling interview as a client at YFS, which led me to look at Wellington volunteer positions as job hunting was proving an impossible task at the time.

Why did you come to us for assistance?

While looking through the Wellington volunteer positions, I saw an opening in administration at Yes for Success and with my previous contract experience working in administration, I decided to apply. I wanted to demonstrate that I can sustain regular work over an extended period, given that my previous roles were temporary contracts. I also wanted to meet more people and reconnect with the community.

How did we help you?

Volunteering at YFS was the perfect opportunity to meet new people and reconnect with the community while feeling useful in a supportive environment. It allowed me to gain new skills, build confidence and grow.

How did our volunteers make you feel?

I really enjoyed my time working with fellow volunteers with a variety of different skills and gaining more experience while performing tasks. The atmosphere was alive and active as we worked together on regular YFS events that presented further opportunities to socialise and meet new people.

Did our programme(s) meet your expectations?

The YFS programmes more than met my expectations. I first used the YFS Interview styling and work wardrobe around the time of my first job, where I gained a sense of confidence through the lovely outfits from YFS for my interview, I believe it helped me get the job.

While volunteering at YFS, I utilised my time by attending the 'How To' series of workshops and sought advice from a Career Coach. Using the YFS programmes and services helped clarify my decision to resume studies at Victoria University in HR and Management to build a strong educational foundation that aligns with the work I want to do moving forward.

What was the result?

Enrolling in the YFS work experience programme and working in HR presented new challenges. I gained confidence in my abilities as my role expanded with new responsibilities and room to grow. My time volunteering with YFS presented the first short-term success toward building a thriving, successful future.

How would you define success?

Reaching out to give something new a try. Connecting with people and the community is important in moving forward and succeeding in life. Volunteering is a great opportunity and path to follow in challenging times.

What advice would you give others?

Feeling useful and helping others for the good of the community makes a difference in rebuilding and starting again on a successful path. Volunteering and working together with others is a great way to build confidence and gain new skills, especially if you feel overwhelmed by challenging circumstances.

What next? Have you set any goals?

My current goal is to focus on my degree to form a strong educational foundation and build on my first short-term success. I plan to set the next goal to resume my job search for a stable job while on my path towards a thriving, successful future.

We wish you all the best Lucy! as you settle into Uni life and strive forward in building those strong foundations and successful future.
