Yes for Success (YFS) volunteer, Kelsey, is fulfilling her dream of helping others. Last year, she completed her Certificate of Health and Wellbeing at Whitireia, where she learned about many different aspects of wellbeing. After a spell working at Wellington Hospital as a health care assistant, Kelsey realised she wanted to forge a career in the field of mental health. And now she’s doing just that.
Kelsey joined YFS in August as a work experience volunteer doing business support work in our Wellington Hub. Here she gained office experience and built her confidence in a professional setting.

How did you hear about YFS?
“I learned about YFS through Workwise,” Kelsey explains.
How did we help you?
“I’m so glad I joined as I was able to build my confidence and expand my work wardrobe. I had a styling for a job interview which was a great help, making me look and feel the part".
How did our volunteers make you feel?
"It was also wonderful to be working amongst people who are so caring and passionate about what they do and how they help people. I was impressed by the high work ethic of all the YFS staff and volunteers.”
What advice would you give others?
“Take risks even if you make mistakes – it just makes you more resilient. Write down your goals and the steps you’ll take to reach them. And don’t beat yourself up for how long it takes to get there – enjoy the journey and be proud of how far you’ve come.”
“Try everything in life!” Kelsey says, “and remember to look after yourself. At some point I hope to take time out to travel the country in my van.”
Now Kelsey leaves us to start a full-time job as a mental health support worker. In time she hopes to study again, possibly focusing on social work, and to work for Rape Crisis, Women’s Refuge or in the field of sexual health.
Congratulations Kelsey, we wish you all the best in the next stage of your career !
