When times get tough, it’s all too easy to lose sight of our self-worth. For Barbara, she found it again thanks in part to Yes for Success (YFS). This year she came to us for a little extra support while she looked for work. Wanting to expand her areas of expertise, Barbara discovered a flare for retail in our Wellington Dress for Success boutique.

“Unemployment can really knock back your confidence,” she says. “But at Yes for Success I knew I could step out of my comfort zone and learn new skills while being supported by a great group of likeminded people.”

With twenty years’ experience as a social worker, Barbara has seen first-hand the many challenges people face today.  Engaging with our customers and volunteers from very different backgrounds tapped into her love of helping people. We’re absolutely thrilled that she’s now secured a job following her vocation as a social worker.  We wish her all the best and know she will make a truly positive difference in people’s lives.

How did you hear about YFS?

I first became involved with YFS in 2019 when I was unemployed. I was styled for interviews and work wear and attended some events. Since then I’ve followed YFS on Facebook, attended fundraising events and been on the mailing list. I’m so glad I kept in touch.

Why did you come to us for assistance?

After a break, I was seeking work again this year and knew that YFS would be the best place for me to get the support I needed. I also wanted to try my hand at something I’d never done before, so I put myself forward for work experience in retail.

How did we help you?

I have gained so much confidence and acquired a range of skills during this time. I have also benefitted from workshops, training and the mentoring programme. YFS has again met and exceeded my expectations.

How did our volunteers make you feel?

The personal support I received from staff and volunteers has been incredible - it made such a difference.

What was the result?

I regained my confidence and self-belief and was able to start applying for jobs in my field again.

How would you define success?

For me there’s no single definition, but one sign of success is that I now feel that I can live in the moment and not worry about the past or the future.

What advice would you give others?

Take every opportunity that is presented to you and do something you've never done before. I had never worked in retail in my life! Most importantly, know that you have worth.
