Vibek finds the recipe for success

Vibek is swapping his baker’s apron for a career in accountancy. To take this ambitious leap, he needed new skills to follow his chosen path. It’s never easy, and Vibek faced many rejections during his job search. Determined to succeed, he enrolled in a volunteer programme at Victoria University, then joined the Work Experience Programme at YFS. Now his courage and persistence have led to a new role at Poneke Bakery, working as both baker and accounts officer. He will transition to full-time accountant with them in the new year. Vibek’s story is a reminder to never give up and do everything we can to turn challenges into opportunities.

“Yes for Success was perfect,” he says, “because it let me pursue my goal of helping others in the community at the same time as getting the work experience I needed. On top of that, I’m really interested in fashion, so it was a great fit for me.”

How did you hear about us?

I applied to Victoria University and enrolled in their Wellington Plus Programme with workshops on Leadership, Social Responsibility, and Skills Development. The programme suggested volunteering as a way of gaining valuable skills while at the same time helping others. On the Volunteer Wellington website, I saw opportunities at YFS and quickly applied.

Why did you come to us for assistance?

I am a baker by trade but wanted to take my career into a new, more corporate direction. This meant gaining office skills and experience. While looking for employment, I faced many rejections, so I decided to turn it into an opportunity to engage with the community and help others, which has long been one of my goals.

How did we help you?

Sasmita in the YFS Wellington Hub really helped my growth. She believes in the volunteers and encourages us to try new tasks, even when we are unsure whether we can do them. She provided a safe place to learn.

How did the volunteers make you feel?

I felt happy and comfortable being me. The volunteers are so collaborative and supportive of each other. It always felt nice going into the Wellington Hub and I’m grateful for the experience.

Did our programme(s) meet your expectations?

Yes! My expectations were exceeded in every way.

What was the result?

I feel more confident in myself and my own story moving forward. The skills and confidence I’ve built during my time at YFS have helped me become work-ready on my new career path.

How would you define success?

For me, success is being able to support my family and the people around me. It means turning a challenge into an opportunity to get a job.

What advice would you give others?

Be open-minded and make use of every chance to keep growing, even though you may feel a bit scared.

What next? Have you set any goals?

Yes, as well as working I’m still on a learning journey! Although I’ve finished my master’s degree in professional accounting, I intend to get my Chartered Accountants qualification.
